News Date: January 31, 2024

Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have officially joined the BRICS bloc after being invited last year, according to South Africa's Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor.
"With respect to the BRICS confirmations, five out of the six have confirmed. That is Saudi Arabia, UAE, Ethiopia, Iran and Egypt," Pandor stated on Wednesday.
South Africa revealed in July 2023 that 22 countries have formally requested to join the BRICS group, with an additional equal number expressing informal interest. This surge underscores the global recognition of BRICS as a pivotal alliance representing major emerging economies.

Zimbabwe to back its currency with gold

Update: The IMF urged Zimbabwe to expedite currency reforms during a recent staff visit, emphasizing a move towards a market-driven exchange rate and the removal of existing distortions.
Zimbabwe's Finance Minister announced new measures to stabilize its local currency in an online press briefing held Monday.
Zimbabwe to back its currency with hard assets such as gold to end exchange-rate instability, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube said.
"The idea going forward is to make sure that we manage the growth of liquidity which has a high correlation to money supply growth and inflation.
The way to do that is to link the exchange rate to some hard asset such as gold," said Ncube.
He also announced a conference of African ministers that Zimbabwe will host at the end of this month.

Fiat destruction. Crypto or gold?

The world stands on the threshold of monetary hyperinflation with the US dollar leading the way. The final months of fiat money are coming into view.
The final solution is bound to be with central banks and government treasury departments retaining their control as issuers of money by the only means at their disposal: deploying their gold reserves to back their currencies, not as fiat, but as credible gold substitutes.
The crypto cohort is likely to have an important effect, in that it sparks an early realization in a growing part of the wider population about what government is doing with money. That is likely to speed up the collapse of fiat currencies compared to what would otherwise occur.
The flexibility in the supply of monetary gold and the stability of prices allows the original rate of interest to be both low and stable. It allows entrepreneurs to do business calculations with a high degree of certainty, knowing in terms of goods the value of money. And savers, who provide the monetary capital for future production can be confident of the future capital value of their savings when lending them for business investment purposes.

Philadelphia FED researchers suggest gold standard

Researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia say switching to the gold standard could stabilize prices.
In their February working paper, researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia suggest that adopting a gold standard could lead to long-term price stability.
Jesus Fernandez-Villaverde and Daniel Sanches argue that inflation and deflation would become temporary events in a hypothetical small open economy operating under the gold standard.

What is Sound Money? Monetary reset

A somewhat polemical term for a currency backed by a tangible commodity such as gold, silver or platinum. Sound money has an intrinsic value, but is more susceptible to deflation than fiat money. Many countries used sound money throughout most of their histories; however, most countries today use fiat money and have since the United States left the Bretton Woods System in the 1970s. The term "sound money" is often used by those who favor its reintroduction. The more common term is hard money.
Given the current fiat money system is on a path towards its own destruction it is not surprising that there has been increasing talk of a monetary reset.

The Bank for International Settlements' Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (CPMI) has worked with financial industry representatives to facilitate a harmonized adoption and use of ISO 20022 for cross-border payments.
